Belgium withdraws from mixed relay triathlon after athlete falls ill

Tue, August 6, 2024
Ahead of the mixed relay triathlon Aug. 5, Belgium said it was pulling out of the event due to athlete Claire Michel’s illness.

Belgium has announced that it will not compete in the upcoming mixed relay triathlon after one of its athletes fell ill.

The day before the event is set to take place at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee revealed in a French statement Aug. 4 that Claire Michel was battling health issues and could not participate.

The BOIC said that the decision to withdraw was made in consultation with the athletes and the entourage, announcing that Michael was ill. The committee, however, did not share additional details about Michel’s health.

The committee said in the statement that they, along with Belgian Triathlon, hope the lessons learned from the situation will aid in improving future competitions.

Michel, 35, previously competed in the women’s triathlon event July 30 and finished 38th. She was expected to compete with teammates Jolien Vermeylen, Marten Van Riel and Jelle Geens, the self-titled Belgium Hammers, in the upcoming relay. The official Olympics website had included Belgium as one of the teams who could take home a medal in the event.

The news of Michel’s withdrawal comes after the Associated Press reported Aug. 3 that Swiss athlete Adrien Briffod would no longer compete in the mixed relay event due to a stomach infection.

Briffod had participated in the men’s triathlon a few days earlier on July 31 and finished 49th. For the women’s and men’s triathlon events, the athletes swam in the Seine River, despite initial concerns about the high levels of bacteria in the water.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee and World Triathlon released a joint statement hours prior to the start of the races that said the water quality was “compliant” for swimming.

The Switzerland Olympic team said in a statement that it was “impossible to say” if swimming in the Seine caused Brifford’s gastrointestinal infection, AP reported.

Read on to see what Belgium had to say about the source of Michel’s illness.

What did Belgium say about Michel’s health?

Following news that Belgium would not participate in the mixed relay triathlon, some outlets reported that Michel had been hospitalized for days. But in a statement sent to TODAY.com, Team Belgium confirmed that was “incorrect.”

“We have seen various statements in national and international media with incorrect information. Please note that Claire Michel has not been in the hospital for four days,” Team Belgium said Aug. 4.

“Furthermore, she was not hospitalised prior to today,” the statement continued. “It is correct that she was taken to the polyclinic in the Olympic Village earlier today for treatment.”

Team Belgium said Michel has been released from the polyclinic and is recovering.

“Meanwhile, she is back in her room in the Olympic Village. As already stated, we do not communicate any further medical details,” the statement concluded.
