In the 1800s and early 1900s, the Western world experienced a sudden outburst of overt occultism among the ultra-wealthy. The rise of "theosophy" was in full swing and became something of a fad that would eventually pave the way for what would later be called "new age" spiritualism. The main driving force behind the Theosophical movement was a small group of obscure academics led in part by a woman named HP Blavatsky. The group was obsessed with esoteric beliefs, Gnosticism and even Satanism.
