The keys for 7 and older essentially are useless now so there is no point buying any, anyway. I have no idea why the rationale is to kill access to the activation server but it was probably needed to stop anytime upgrades logistics and that avenue. or most likely they probably just want to hard line the sand.
Either way its BS and it means all those legitimate owners of the software have keys that are useless now. I have quite a few some i bought legitimate, i also have builders discs and i have lots that just came to me from stickers. All useless now a favorite past time to look at.

Just because the activation servers were taken down doesn't mean the keys are useless. That just means one has to call Microsoft Support and have someone activate it for you. I haven't given up on my computers with Windows XP and 7 yet. Windows XP is unique in that it won't let you log in if you don't activate it within 30 days. That isn't true for Windows 7 but I still like to activate it. I haven't activated any Windows XP or 7 computers since a year ago. I don't know if I can do it again. Even then I know there will come a day when that won't be possible.
The keys still work i am not saying they don't because clearly we can still call in and use them.
I am saying they are more useless now then ever. Microsoft does not want consumers on windows 7 or to be able to anytime upgrade. The rigamarole involved is one step over if we cannot punch the keys into to the activation window and have them work then imo they are useless, i am not calling in to activate windows when i can just do that another way.
We don't have to prove we own Windows on a OS that is not in production or receiving any updates they don't care about it like an old chew toy.
The major reason to activate was so that you don't lose features and so that some parts of the OS didn't break but now when its locked into its time capsule none of that matters, just activate in a grey manner and you avoid things breaking like MSE etc. I payed for plenty of keys so its not like i am stealing the software.
